The basic unit of the Ecological Focus Area (EFA) element is represented by the continuous area of agricultural land, as well as non-agricultural land if it fulfils agricultural non-production function. The EFA element could be also represented by other shape that is part of the utilised agricultural area or is adjacent to it. The types of EFA elements are defined in National Regulation 307/2014 Coll.

Ecological Focus Area (EFA) are generated by the State Agricultural Intervention Fund (Paying Agency) by photointerpretation and digitisation of ortoimagery in scale 1: 600 - 1: 800. The boundaries of Reference Parcel are updated based on actual ortofotos, that are captured and created by Czech Office for Surveying, Mapping and Cadastre (metadata: https://geoportal.cuzk.cz/).Besides that, Ecological Focus Area are updated continuosly during the year, on the basis of initiatives for updates (e.g. from farmers, land owners), and results of systematic field visits provided as a part of the annual on-the-spot checks.
