Database of geographic names of the Czech Republic (Geonames)
Geonames is the database of geographical names of the Czech Republic. It serves as a system for managing named objects. A standardised geographical name is maintained as part of the descriptive information for approximately 165 types of named geographical objects. The geometric representation of some Geonames objects corresponds to the position of the geographical object in ZABAGED® to which the name relates. Another group of objects — primarily land lots, forest land, and local parts of settlements — has simplified geometry corresponding to the placement of names in the national map series. Objects are represented by a vector (point) component with attributes containing additional information about the names.
The Geonames data are exploited as an information source for Czech geographic names and their topology in Geogprahic Information Systems (GIS) especially in the public administration. Standardized names are binding for state map series publishers and recommended to use to other cartographic products publishers in the Czech Republic.

Creation of Geonames started in 1997 with populating of standardised names from the documentation of the Commision for Geographic Names at ČÚZK. The process was finalized for the whole territory of the Czech Republic in 2005. The 1st update was completed for the entire territory of the Czech Republic in 2009, in 2010-2014 the 2nd and in 2015-2017 the 3rd update. Starting in 2019, the 4th update of Geonames was started, ending in 2021. In 2022, the 5th update was started.
