Klaudyan's map of Bohemia, year 1518

The oldest known independent map of Bohemia and Glatz from 1518. Author: Mikuláš Klaudyán. The map is oriented to the south. It depicts 280 settlements, hydrography, vegetation and major long-distance routes. Towns are divided into royal and vassal, Catholic and non-Catholic. Czech terminology is used. The map features rich heraldic decoration. At the bottom are the coats of arms of Kutná Hora, Prague and Žatec. The scene of a carriage pulled in two directions refers to the religiously divided Czech society, and the scene of an attacked merchant's carriage points to the poor security situation in the country. It is the most valuable Czech cartographic monument.
