Regional Plans of Forest Development (RPFD)-Forest road network (FRN)
Forest road network (FRN) includes transportation facilities of any kind which serve for trailing the wood and other forest products, transportation of forest management staff and material to connect forest complexes onto the public road network, and other purposes. The forest roads are classified into the 4 categories according to the Czech standard ČSN 73 6108. The forest logging roads of the category 1L and 2L are included in the RPFD (Regional Plans of Forest Development) datasets at FMI. Apart from the logging roads, the datasets include also other purpose-build roads and public roads of lower level (the small local roads) which pass through the forests and serve for logging purposes – stocking, loading and transportation of wood. Further, the RPFD datasets include roads so-called links (interconnects) serving to connect the logging roads outside of forests and to connect the forest road network with the public road system. Typically these are local roads of category 2L or higher. The layers of Roads, Highways and streets from the Elementary base of geographic data ZABAGED® ČÚZK are considered as the public road network data for this purpose. The logging roads in RPFD are classified into the categories:L1L – forest logging roads for all year utilisation and reasonable surface qualityL2L – forest logging roads for at least seasonal utilisation with the simple dust surface, reinforced, or non-reinforced on the bearable subsoilV1L – other (non-forest) roads important for the transportation of wood corresponding to forest logging road of category 1LV2L – other (non-forest) roads important for the transportation of wood corresponding to forest logging road of category 2L N – proposition for adding a new road into the FRN, reconstruction of an existing logging road which lost the category characteristic due to the operational damage
The forest road network serves as a basic in infrastructure to manage forest proprieties. The forest logging roads make accessible the forest complexes for management purposes (transportation of wood, staff and material), socio-cultural purposes (recreation, education), administration and others purposes such as traffic of the fireman and rescue services, medical service and special technique. The geo-located layers of the forest road network at the FMI datasets create the complete topological network of the spinal infrastructure to access forests. Serve for the navigation, optimisation, calculations of the road density, logging distances, solving the transportation problems, development and evaluation of the road network status.

Forest Management Institute (FMI) is responsible for creating and updating the forest road network database. The methodology of the data acquisition is straightforward. The information about road quality and category are periodically updated while 10% of area of the Czech Republic is yearly visited and updated. The processing is done for individual large forest areas and precedes the actualisation of the forest management plans and schemes. The road data are updated:a)According to the information from the forest owner (property manager)b)By the field survey using the GPS tracking technology.Data are updated annually.
